Rescue Breathing
Rescue breathing is the correct type of care to provide for a victim who:
- Is unconscious
- Is NOT breathing or is breathing abnormally
- Has a pulse

Using a Bag Valve Mask Resuscitator (BVM)
Key Points From This Sections
- Ventilations should be given at a rate of:
- Adults; 1 ventilation every 5-6 seconds
- Children & Infants; 1 ventilation every 3 seconds
- Adults; 1 ventilation every 5-6 seconds
- When Using a BVM (Bag Valve Mask), two (2) rescuers are require to properly seal and place the mask.
- Breaths should make the chest clearly rise. Rescuers should adjust the amount of air provided to match the size of their victim.
- If breaths do not make the chest clearly rise, even after repositioning the head, assume the victim has an airway obstructions and begin care for an unconscious chocking victim.
